Welcome to Leadership Texas

"Leadership Texas is an excellent opportunity for Texas women to learn how to become leaders through networking, education and inspiration while interacting with women from all parts of Texas and from all walks of life."
Congresswoman Kay Granger, 12th District of Texas (LT '86)

"Leadership Texas broadened my understanding of critical issues facing society and instilled the idea that I can make a significant contribution. The program stresses that it is up to the individual to seize potential and reach our greatest heights."
Texas State Representative Christine Hernandez (LT ‘84)

"The benefits of the program are so obvious: new educational opportunities, an enhancement of leadership skills, and an awareness and appreciation of what's happening outside the firm. We as a company benefit when our people take a broader view."
Former President of Southwestern Bell, Jim Adams

Leadership Texas, a program of the Foundation for Women’s Resources, is the premier statewide women's leadership program. Since 1983, Leadership Texas has been providing valuable education and training to Texas women leaders who seek to improve their leadership skills and expand their knowledge of the diverse issues, dynamics and cultures that impact the State of Texas.

Purpose

Leadership Texas brings together Texas women who have demonstrated their leadership ability in their profession, community or workplace. The vision of the program is to identify and develop Texas' women leaders by providing them with essential information, an awareness of ongoing changes, sharpened skills and an enduring network of women from diverse backgrounds.

A competitive application process examines the leadership roles applicants have sought and accepted in their profession and/or community. By selecting women who are recognized as leaders, the Leadership Texas program focuses on enhancing their leadership skills and knowledge of the state so they are prepared to seize greater leadership opportunities.

Leadership Texas does not only seek to educate and inspire the individual woman leader. Participants also benefit from establishing relationships and becoming part of a statewide network of more than 2,000 Leadership Texas graduates.

Promoting Diversity

Ethnic, geographic and professional diversity is a priority in selecting each Leadership Texas class. This diversity is essential because of the value added by different perspectives, experiences and cultures.

Representing both rural and urban areas, Leadership Texas graduates are corporate executives, educators, community leaders, lawyers, physicians, allied health professionals, journalists, artists, entrepreneurs and elected officials, among others. Emanating from a diversity of backgrounds and personal experiences, these women reflect the ethnic, cultural, geographic, career and volunteer activities of the women in the State of Texas.

Program Structure

Through Leadership Texas, selected women participants expand their professional and personal associations, while investigating major issues affecting the state and nation. Graduates of Leadership Texas are leaders who have broadened their perspectives to benefit themselves, their families and the businesses and communities in which they interact and excel.

Leadership Texas participants explore a wide range of topics and futuristic issues, including those in science and technology, education, business, government, the environment and the economy. The curriculum also includes leadership skills enhancement through interactions with state and national experts, presentations by outstanding speakers and on-site visits to major business, education and cultural centers. Through exposure to a diversity of information and ideas, participants increase their understanding of the challenges that leaders face in both the private and public sectors.

The year-long Leadership Texas program is structured around five, two and one-half day sessions in February, April, June, August and October. One session is held in Austin, with the other four session locations rotating each year.

Holding Leadership Texas sessions around the state has proven to be a key aspect of the program's value and gives program participants first-hand knowledge of the very real differences that exist between and within regions of the state.

The program for Leadership Texas sessions uses each city as a backdrop for presentations and discussions of current state issues with local and state leaders and experts. These sessions are held at locations that provide a context for each topic, such as universities, correctional facilities, corporate headquarters or South Texas colonias.

Cost

The tuition cost for Leadership Texas is $3700. Tuition does not include expenses associated with transportation to and from sessions and hotel accommodations. If employer assistance is not available to those in need, scholarship assistance is available through Leadership Texas to offset tuition cost. The amount of available scholarship money varies from year to year. Payment for tuition may be made either by check or credit card (MasterCard, VISA or American Express).
